1. Can I put a sign out about my garage sale, to help find my pet or to advertise my business?

No. Signs are prohibited in the public right of way or on Town-owned property, except for sandwich boards as described in the FAQ below. In an effort to keep Castle Rock beautiful, these signs will be removed when placed in a public right of way.

2. Can my business put out a sandwich board sign?

The Town of Castle Rock Municipal Code allows one sandwich board in the public right of way per organization. 

Sandwich boards are:

• Allowed during daylight hours only (no illumination)
• Permitted during hours that the organization is physically occupying the building where the board is placed
• Not to exceed 4 feet in height and 8 square feet
• Not to create a safety hazard for pedestrians or motorists
  • Cannot block the view of pedestrian crossings or intersections
  • Maintains a minimum of 4 feet clear sidewalk width
  • Cannot block building entrances or exits

3. I have always been able to post signs to advertise my landscaping business. What has changed?

Town Municipal Code has never allowed these signs in the public right of way. Historically, we have removed these during the week but did not regularly provide enforcement on weekends. As part of an ongoing effort to keep our community clean and beautiful, Town Council has directed Town staff to remove any signs (real estate, garage sales, business advertising, lost pets, etc.) that are placed in a public right of way.

4. I lost my dog, why am I not allowed to post a sign to find him?

While we understand that the loss of a pet can be difficult, please use online platforms such as Nextdoor or Facebook community groups for this purpose. 

5. Can I place a sign in my yard or my neighborhood for advertisement?

You are allowed one sign on your own property that can measure no larger than 6 square feet and 4 feet in height. Placing signs anywhere other than your own property is prohibited or requires permission from the property owner.

6. Do I need a permit for a banner?

Yes, the following rules apply:

• One sign per street front, per business location
• Maximum of two permits per year
• Signs can be posted for 30 days or the duration of a special event
• Signs cannot be larger than 32 square feet

7. Does the Town allow electronic message signs?

Yes,  see Castle Rock Municipal Code 19.04.054.

8. Can I place window signs at my business?

Yes, window signage is allowed, but may not exceed 25% of the window area.

9. When do I need a permit?

A sign permit is required to display, erect, relocate or alter most permanent and temporary signs. Apply for a sign permit.

10. Are inflatable balloons allowed?

Wind signs are prohibited. Examples include, but are not limited to, air dancers, balloons, fan-operated air puppets, feather flags, flags, inflatable signs, sky dancers and wind socks.
