With the new year comes a new election season in Castle Rock.
Town residents elect representatives annually in April – Districts 1, 2, 4 and 6 in even-numbered years, and Districts 3, 5 and 7 in odd-numbered years.
The boundaries of all districts but District 7 recently were shifted to reflect changes in the number of registered voters, so those considering a run for office should check to make sure their districts have not changed. The new district map can be found at CRgov.com/votemap.
Anyone considering running is invited to attend an orientation session at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course, 2156 Red Hawk Ridge Drive. Information about how to circulate and submit nominating forms will be available, and current Town Council members and Town staff will provide insight and answer questions.
Registered voters who have lived in Town at least 12 consecutive months and who reside in one of the districts up for election are eligible to seek a seat. Prospective candidates may begin circulating nominating petitions Feb. 5; the petitions, which require 25 signatures, are due Feb. 19.
Town Council service is a part-time commitment with monthly stipends of $650 for Councilmembers, $800 for the Mayor Pro Tem or $950 for the Mayor. (The new Council will elect the Mayor at its first meeting.) Council terms are two years each, and tenure is limited to six consecutive years.
As in past Town elections, the 2010 election will occur by mail. Ballots will go out to registered voters in mid-March. All voters, regardless of whether their Council district is up for election, will receive ballots this year due to two Townwide charter amendment proposals. Voters who do not receive a ballot or who need their ballot mailed to an address other than the one at which they are registered should call the Town Clerk’s Office, 303-660-1367.
