Work to repair Rec Center slide tower underway

Updated Oct. 21, 2023, to add pool closure dates.

This week, Castle Rock Recreation Center visitors will begin to see construction activity related to necessary repairs of the slide tower structures in the Leisure Pool area.

The waterslides at the Rec Center have been closed since March 2022 due to concerns about the safety of the stairs and surrounding structure. On Sept. 5, Town Council approved a contract with Saunders Construction to address the issues so patrons can use the slides again, starting next spring.

Contractors are currently placing a temporary barrier between the pool and the slide tower structure to ensure continued pool operations. A partial closure of the western parking area is also in place and will remain through project completion.

Work will consist of demolishing the current staircase used to access the slides, along with the pump pit below and the building enclosure for the area. A portion of the exterior slides will be temporarily removed for access as a new stair enclosure is constructed using structural concrete block. Galvanized steel stairs and railings will be added and reinforced fiberglass stair treads and landing decks will be installed.

To ensure moisture protection and minimize the possibility of rust, various high-performance sealants, coatings and insulation will be added. In addition, new mechanical systems, ductwork and windows will be installed to improve air handling, lighting and air quality. The project is expected to be completed, and the slides operational, in spring 2024.

The Leisure Pool area will remain open throughout the project with the exception of a six- to eight-week period that will begin on Oct. 22, 2023. At that time, the pool will be closed to allow contractors to refurbish the ceiling. Short temporary closures may be required throughout construction. Pool users should download the RockREC app at CRgov.com/RockREC and sign up for notifications to access timely information about closures.

Recreation user revenues will be the primary source used to fund the approximately $2.5 million project. Stay up to date at CRgov.com/SlideTowerRepair.
