[ARCHIVED] Sept. 5 Council update

September 5 Town Council update

A contract to repair the waterslide structure at the Castle Rock Recreation Center was approved at Town Council’s Sept. 5 meeting.

Here is a closer look:

Rec Center slide tower repairs — The waterslides in the Leisure Pool area at the Castle Rock Recreation Center have been closed since March 2022 due to concerns about the safety of the stairs and surrounding structure. On Tuesday, Town Council authorized the expenditure of up to $2.7 million to address the issues so patrons can use the slides again starting next year.

The work will be completed by Saunders Construction, who built the Recreation Center addition containing the Leisure Pool, which opened in 2006. Work will consist of demolishing the current staircase used to access the slides, along with the pump pit below and the building enclosure for the area. The slides will be taken down as a new enclosure is constructed, including galvanized steel railings and stairs and fiberglass treads and landing decks. Various sealants, coating and insulation will be added to ensure moisture protection, and the air-handling and lighting for the area will also be improved as part of the project.

Two other general contractors declined to provide estimates for the needed repairs. The sole source agreement with Saunders is for $2.49 million, plus a Town-managed contingency of $248,654. Recreation user revenues will be the primary source used to fund the repairs. The work is expected to commence soon and be completed by April 2024.

Colorado State law and the Town of Castle Rock Home Rule Charter require an annual audit of the Town’s financial statements. The goal of an audit is to provide reasonable assurance that the financial statements of the Town are presented in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles. At the Tuesday meeting, FORVIS LLP, an independent certified public accounting firm, reported that the Town’s financial statements for the year ending Dec. 31, 2022, are clean and appear fairly stated in all material respects.
