This week, Union Pacific Railroad will begin initial construction on portions of Second and Third streets as a first step to create the highly anticipated Downtown train horn quiet zone. Once all work for the quiet zone is complete, residents will routinely not hear a horn sound when a train passes through Downtown Castle Rock.
“We are pleased to share that initial quiet zone construction work by Union Pacific is moving forward. We know this project has been top of mind for our residents and Downtown stakeholders,” said Public Works Director Dan Sailer. “Once these required safety improvements are made and the quiet zone is established, our residents and visitors will experience a higher quality of life while living, exploring Downtown or dining at one of our many local businesses.”
The project includes the installation of new railroad crossing gates, as well as new sidewalks, curbs, signs and markings, for both Second and Third street crossings. Minor improvements at the Fifth Street crossing are also planned.
The estimated construction timeline is weather dependent and subject to change by Union Pacific Railroad. During roadwork, access to local businesses will be maintained. Motorists passing through Downtown should watch for signs along the roadside for the most up-to-date information:
- Beginning Thursday, Jan. 12, to Monday, Jan. 16, Second Street at the railroad crossing will be closed. During this time, traffic and pedestrians will be detoured to Third Street.
- Beginning Thursday, Jan. 26, to Monday, Jan. 30, Third Street at the railroad crossing will be closed. During this time, traffic and pedestrians will be detoured to Second Street.
The next phase of work is expected to begin in spring 2023, where final curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements will be made at the railroad crossing on Second and Third streets. Once constructed, the Town will notify appropriate regulating agencies that the quiet zone has been established, and the train horns will “go silent” after inspection.
