[ARCHIVED] Construction to complete Castle Rock’s portion of the Colorado Front Range Trail begins

Colorado Front Range Trail

Recreational trail users, hikers, cyclists and commuters will soon be more connected to locations throughout Castle Rock and the Front Range thanks to the construction of the final three segments of the Colorado Front Range Trail in Castle Rock. Contractors began work to complete the trail this week in the Terrain neighborhood of Castle Rock.

The addition of segments in Cobblestone Ranch and Terrain will extend McMurdo Gulch Trail northeast to connect to Cherry Creek Regional Trail and south to meet Hangman’s Gulch Trail. In Montaine, work will extend East Plum Creek Trail south to Lowell Ranch. All three sections are expected to be complete by fall 2023.

“In Town surveys, residents consistently rank developing new trails as a high priority,” said Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Brauer. “We know connecting the community through a network of trails is important to our residents and helps maintain the high quality of life in Castle Rock.”

As a major crossroads in the Colorado Front Range Trail system, completion of Castle Rock’s contribution will help connect Denver to the north and Colorado Springs to the south. Find additional timeline and project information at CRgov.com/FrontRangeTrail.

The $7 million project will be funded through the Annual Trail Improvement Account, while a $2 million grant awarded by the Great Outdoors Colorado - GOCO Connect Initiative will be provided to the Town at completion.

GOCO grants also helped to fund the construction of previously completed portions of this trail system, including East Plum Creek Trail between Meadows Parkway and Wolfensberger Road, and the East Plum Creek Trail southern extension.

This project is also supported through various partnerships, including with Douglas County, the Douglas Land Conservancy, the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Foundation and developers in Castle Rock’s Terrain and Montaine communities.

The Colorado Front Range Trail is a statewide-envisioned network that aims to connect communities along the Front Range from Wyoming to New Mexico. To date, approximately 300 miles have been completed. Ultimately, the trail will span over 800 miles through 15 cities, 14 counties and many smaller towns.
