The Town’s moratorium on commercial medical marijuana activity has been extended to June 30, 2011, Town Council decided Tuesday.
The Town has had the moratorium in place since early this year. It was set to expire Dec. 31. However, a referendum on the medical marijuana ban Town Council enacted is pending.
“We need additional time to properly address this situation,” Town Attorney Bob Slentz told Town Council last week.
Town Council in September passed an ordinance prohibiting commercial marijuana operations in Castle Rock as of Jan. 1.
Last month, the owner of the Town’s only commercial medical marijuana business submitted sufficient valid signatures to challenge the ban via the state’s referendum process.
The protest period for the signatures ended Tuesday, with no protests filed.
Town Council is set to reconsider the ban at its Dec. 7 meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St.
If Council does not overturn the ban, it must set an election date for the voters to decide whether the ban should remain in place. That likely would occur with the April 5 municipal election.
