[ARCHIVED] Interested in running for Town Council or Mayor? Here’s what you need to know.

How to run for Mayor and Town Council

If you’re looking to have a positive impact on your community, you might consider running for Town Council. This year, there are three Council seats up for election – Districts 3 and 5, and the Mayor at Large. The election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8. 

Elections for Mayor and Town Council are held in November of even-numbered years. Seats are up for election on an alternating basis, so the election for District 1, 2, 4 and 6 Councilmembers will be held in 2024. The Mayor and Councilmembers serve four-year terms.

Elections for Town Council are nonpartisan. Candidates for Town Council must live within the district in which they are running, must live within the district boundaries throughout the term of office and cannot be a Town employee. Candidates must also be U.S. citizens, registered to vote in Castle Rock and have lived in Town for at least 12 months prior to the Nov. 8 election date.

An optional orientation session for prospective candidates looking to learn more about running for office will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at The Millhouse at Philip S. Miller Park, 1381 W. Plum Creek Parkway.

Those interested in becoming a candidate can pick up nomination petitions between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St. If you’re unable to pick up the nomination petitions during the scheduled time, email the Town Clerk’s Office at to schedule an alternative pick-up time at a later date. A Candidate Committee must be registered before accepting or spending any campaign funds. Additional details and the Candidate Committee registration form are available at The Candidate Orientation Packet will be available online by Aug. 8. 

The deadline to turn in Councilmember nomination petitions with the Town Clerk is 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29. The petition must contain signatures from at least 25 registered electors in the district the candidate would represent. Mayoral candidates are required to obtain the signatures of at least 10 registered electors from each of the Town’s six election districts. A map of the election districts is available at

Please note, a registered voter may sign only one Mayor candidate’s nominating petition and one Councilmember candidate’s nominating petition. Additionally, candidates must personally circulate their own nominating petitions.
