[ARCHIVED] Learn the sounds of fire safety with Castle Rock Fire and Rescue during Fire Prevention Week

Learn the sounds of fire safety

How many times have you ignored a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm? During Fire Prevention Week Oct. 3-9, Castle Rock Fire and Rescue wants to help you understand your alarms better so you can be prepared in the event of a fire.

When an alarm makes noise – take action. What is your alarm trying to tell you?

  • A continuous set of three loud beeps from your smoke alarm means smoke or fire. Get out, call 911, and stay out.
  • A continuous set of four loud beeps from your CO alarm means carbon monoxide is present in your home. Get outside to fresh air and call 911.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds from your smoke or CO alarm means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.

Throughout the week, tune into the Town’s social media channels @CRgov for more tips, or visit to learn more.

Coloring Contest

To help Castle Rock students engage with Fire Prevention Week, CRFD is hosting its annual fire safety coloring contest. This event encourages kids to "Learn the Sounds of Safety" in a creative way.

Five winners will receive a presentation by CRFD at their school, including an ice cream party for their entire class. Winning entries will also be made into a decal and placed on the side of a fire truck where it will ride for a year.

The contest is open to third through sixth-grade students. To enter, have your student speak to their elementary school teacher, or email with questions.
