[ARCHIVED] Purified reuse water flows to Castle Rock Water customers

Purified Reuse Water

Securing the community’s future drop by drop, is the motto of Castle Rock Water. With the addition of purified reuse water, the department is living up to those expectations. Reuse water was introduced to the Town’s water supply earlier this month.

Purified reuse water involves producing safe, high-quality drinking water from the water that has been used in sinks, showers and toilets. Ultimately, it will constitute one-third of the community’s water supply, and will be a big step in providing a sustainable water supply despite drought or growth.

Castle Rock Water began planning for purified reuse water in 2006. The addition of advanced treatment processes at the Plum Creek Water Purification Facility were completed earlier this year. These advanced processes allow Castle Rock Water to purify reuse water to exceptionally high drinking water standards. Additionally, the advanced treatment processes provide redundancies to ensure contaminants are eradicated during one or more of the nine-treatment processes.

“All the water in the world is really reuse water,” said Castle Rock Water Director Mark Marlowe. “Most people in this country live downstream of another town or city, so reuse is occurring in most places everyday already. It’s all part of the water cycle. With purified reuse, we are able to treat the water to a standard that’s even higher than our current water supply.”

Purified reuse water is an economical, sustainable and environmentally sound water supply option. It’s cost-effective because reusing water helps limit the purchase of new water and the pumping of water from great distances. It’s sustainable because reuse water is not impacted by growth or climate change. And, it’s environmentally friendly because it helps limit the mining for water from deep underground.

Reusing water is also becoming the norm among the water industry. Communities around the country are working to integrate purified reuse water into their water supply portfolios. Aurora Water has used reuse water since 2010, and has been providing some of that water to Castle Rock through the WISE project since 2018. It’s expected that by 2065, all South Metro community will include reuse water in their water supply.
