[ARCHIVED] Nov. 3 Council update: renewal of a franchise agreement between the Town and IREA moves forward

Town Council Update Nov. 3

An ordinance approving a franchise agreement between the Town and IREA was the main topic on Town Council’s Nov. 3 meeting agenda.

Here’s a closer look:

  • IREA franchise agreement ordinance moves forward – Town Council approved on the first reading an ordinance to move forward with a franchise agreement between the Town and Intermountain Rural Electric Association (IREA). The agreement was renewed in 2010 for a 10-year term that is set to expire at the end of the year. If approved on second reading, this ordinance would renew the agreement for another 10-year term.

The Town and other municipalities require franchise agreements for utility and cable companies to use public rights of way to provide service to customers. These agreements outline requirements and fees for using the rights of way, which are properties the Town holds to maintain roads, trails, drainageways and other public infrastructure.

The proposed agreement would keep the franchise fee, which is passed through to customers, consistent for another 10 years. The only substantial changes aim to improve the Town’s service response from IREA when experiencing electrical issues, including those involving traffic signals.
