[ARCHIVED] Satisfy your wanderlust with weekly guided hikes

Weekly Wanderlust

Tolkien said it best, “not all those who wander are lost.” Join the Parks and Recreation Department for weekly hikes to truly discover the spirit of outdoor adventure and explore the best places to wander near home.

Guided Local and Front Range hikes are scheduled for every Wednesday through September. Front Range Hikes are between 3.5 and 7 miles, and are considered moderate to strenuous. Elevation gains will be between 850 and 1,000 feet. Local Hikes are up to 5 miles, and are considered easy to moderate with minimal elevation gains.

More experienced hikers are encouraged to check out the Advanced Hikes on Saturdays. These hikes are up to 12 miles and are considered moderate to strenuous with changes in elevation of up to 2,500 feet.

2020 hiking schedule:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 16 – Front Range Hike
    • Staunton State Park – Elk Falls Pond (Jefferson County)
    • 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 23 – Local Hike
    • Santa Fe Quarry Mesa
    • 9:30 to 11 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 30 – Local Hike
    • Dawson Butte (Douglas County)
    • 9:30 a.m. to noon

Each hike is led by an experienced Town outdoor specialist. These are great opportunities for families looking to get outside with kids during the hybrid school schedule. Participants can either gather at the MAC to carpool ($5 fee) or meet at the trailhead. More information is available by clicking on the Athletics and Adventure icon at
