[ARCHIVED] Young athletes encouraged to “try” at annual youth triathlon Sept. 13

Tri the Rock, Sunday, Sept. 13

Calling all athletes in the making. The motto is simple – all you have to do is try. The Town’s annual Tri the Rock event inspires kids to get active and try their best. So, get ready. This year’s event is Sunday, Sept. 13.

The youth triathlon will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon at Butterfield Crossing Park and Pool, 3952 W. Butterfield Crossing Drive. Registration is now available at

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be some changes this year to abide by State health guidelines and accommodate social distancing. Start times will be staggered. Additionally, participants over 10 years old will be asked to wear face coverings during the check in process. Kids will be allowed to remove face coverings during the race.

Youth athletes of all ability levels, ages 5 to 18, are invited to participate. Please remember participants compete based on their age as of race day. The race distances are:

  • Ages 5-6: 25-meter swim (one pool length), 1-kilometer bike ride (one lap around Butterfield Park) and a 500-meter run
  • Ages 7-10: 50-meter swim (two pool lengths, down and back), 4-kilometer bike ride and a 1-kilometer run
  • Ages 11-14: 100-meter swim (four pool lengths, down and back twice), 8-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run
  • Ages 15-18: 100-meter swim, 16-kilometer bike ride and 3-miile run

Event fees are $60 and the registration deadline is 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, goody bag and post-race meal. Plus, the first 100 registered will receive a commemorative Tri the Rock beanie. The local school with the most participants will get to display the traveling Tri the Rock trophy for an entire year.

Bike racks open at 6 a.m. for ages 7-18, and the transition area closes at 7:15 a.m. to prepare for the first race. The races begin at 7:30 a.m. However, check-in for ages 5-6 does not begin until 10:30 a.m., since the group doesn’t start until the other races have finished. Packet pickup is available from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Miller Activity Complex, 1375 W. Plum Creek Parkway.

Is your child excited to give the event a try for the first time? Make sure they’re prepared with a free first-timer clinic hosted Saturday, Sept. 6 at Butterfield Crossing Park. Participants are invited for a one-hour timeslot between 2 and 4 p.m. The clinic is designed to ease anxiety for kids and their parents and will include a review of the racecourse and additional information. Space is limited, and registration is required.
