[ARCHIVED] Kids camps spark winter wonder

Winter Camps are held for children during school breaks at the Rec Center

With winter break around the corner, now is the perfect time to register children for camp. Parks and Recreation is offering a variety of camps full of play, imagination and fun.

The following programs are open for registration:

Rock Rec Camp: Designed to keep elementary-aged children busy from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., campers will enjoy field trips, games, sports and crafts, with a day at the pool. Rock Rec Camp runs Dec. 23, 26 and 27 and Dec. 30, Jan. 2 and 3, to accommodate holidays. The fee is $118 for residents and $168 for nonresidents.

Inspire to Learn and Imagine STEMplicity Camps: These science and engineering specialty camps are for ages 5-12. Around the World in Two Days will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 26 and 27. Campers will travel around the world through music and games, stopping in France and Japan to experience the culture and work together to build LEGO versions of famous landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower and the Imperial Palace.  

The fee is $120 for residents and $140 for nonresidents. A half-day option is also available, ending at noon for a reduced price of $80 for residents and $100 for nonresidents.

Gadgets and Gizmos is another offering that runs Jan. 2 and 3 during the same time and for the same price. Campers will become inventors and work together to build LEGO gadgets, such as an alarm clock and marshmallow shooter.

Dungeons and Dragons Camp: This interactive gaming camp is a great way to grow social and leadership skills for ages 11-17. It runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 30-Jan. 3. The fee is $175 for residents and $185 for nonresidents. The cost includes materials for a take-home craft and a T-shirt.

And, be sure to check out our KidzArt Holiday Gift Workshop on Saturday, Dec. 14, before school is out. This day camp runs from noon to 3:30 p.m. and helps kids create crafty, one-of-a-kind gifts. Participants will leave with up to three crafts wrapped and ready to give. This workshop is for ages 5-12 with a fee of $65 for residents and $75 for nonresidents.
