What’s presently a former gas station will be torn down this year to allow for future improvements at one of the Interstate 25 interchanges in Town.
Town Council last year authorized the purchase of the property at 830 N. Wilcox St., which at that time had been operating as a retail gas station. The property is on the east side of Wilcox Street near the Wolfensberger Road interchange with I-25.
Following environmental reviews, the sale closed this spring. The gas station ceased operations, and the Town initiated efforts to clean up the site.
Environmental consultant A.G. Wassenaar will lead the cleanup efforts on the Town’s behalf, starting first with an asbestos assessment. Following any necessary abatement, the gas station building and canopy will be demolished, and the underground fuel storage tanks removed. The hope is to complete this work by the end of 2019.
The site will then be filled in with fresh soil to make way for future interchange improvements, the timing of which are unknown.
For 2017, the interchange was No. 6 on the list of the 15 locations in Town with the highest motor vehicle crash rates. Identified mitigation measures in the 2017 Town of Castle Rock Motor Vehicle Crash Facts report included assessing the possibility of a roundabout at the interchange.
The Colorado Department of Transportation controls the interchange, along with all other interchanges, and will determine the ultimate design of any improvements.
The area of the interchange is being explored as a potential future location for a stop for CDOT’s Bustang service, which serves the I-25 corridor between Tejon and Fort Collins. The service does not presently stop in Castle Rock, but CDOT is evaluating several possible locations where a stop could be added here in the future.
