Signs are necessary to provide direction and guidance for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Outdoor signs are vital to Town businesses. The Town of Castle Rock municipal sign code regulations
are for the protection of the public and to ensure consistency with the community's goals and objectives.

Sign permit required
A sign permit is required to display, erect, relocate or alter most permanent and temporary signs. All signs with electric components require a separate electrical permit

Sign types allowed
The following permanent sign types are allowed in the Town of Castle Rock. These sign types are subject to all other codes and regulations and include, but are not limited to: awning signs, canopy signs, flags, freestanding monument signs, joint identification signs, parapet signs, projecting signs, subdivision identification signs, suspended signs, sandwich board signs
, wall signs, and window signs.
The following temporary sign types are allowed, are subject to all other codes and regulations, and include but are not limited to: banner signs, political signs, real estate and construction signs, and window signs.
Sign types allowed in the Downtown Overlay District
In addition to other signs allowed in Town, the following permanent sign types are allowed in the Downtown Overlay District
only, to encourage a distinctive and creative environment. These sign types are subject to all other codes and regulations, and include but are not limited to: signs with visible moving, revolving or rotating parts; signs with flashing lights; strings of light bulbs; marquee signs; and signs that incorporate projected images. Sign types not allowed
Sign types that are prohibited in the Town include, but are not limited to: billboards, home occupation signs in residential areas, portable advertising devices on trailers or wheels, wind signs (including balloons and wind flags), pennants, and signs that emit sound. Roof signs, rotating and animated signs, and signs with flashing lights are prohibited in all zoning districts except the Downtown Overlay District.
Town Council can approve a special permit for a revocable license agreement to install off-site signs in the public right-of-way. The purpose of the sign plaza structures is to assist the public in locating local home builders, subdivisions and developments.
Political and campaign signs
Signs advertising political candidates or ballot initiatives are not allowed to be posted in the public right-of-way. Political signs may only be displayed on private property with property owner approval. Political signs located on power poles, traffic signal poles, in medians or in the tree lawn between the street and sidewalk are prohibited.
Right-of-way encroachment permit
Awning, canopy, suspended, or projecting signs that are proposed to extend or project over the public right-of-way must also be approved for a revocable encroachment permit. The encroachment permit may be emailed to the zoning manager, or submitted to the Town of Castle Rock, Development Services Dept., Zoning Division, 100 N. Wilcox St., Castle Rock, CO 80104.
Temporary banner signs for special events
One temporary banner sign permit may be issued per business. Banner signs may be no larger than 32 square feet, must be posted on a building or structure and may be posted for up to 180 days or the duration of the event. Two temporary banner sign permits are allowed per business, per year.
Town LED sign for special community events

Appeals and variances
Persons who feel aggrieved by any administrative decision in error or contrary to the intent of the sign code, or persons who feel that due to special circumstances a hardship exists, are entitled to a fair and impartial hearing with the Board of Adjustment. The burden is upon the applicant to prove practical difficulties and unnecessary hardship if the strict letter of the code were to be followed.
