Water reuse will ensure a strong water future

Castle Rock Water completed the addition of Advanced Treatment to the Plum Creek Water Purification Facility in 2020, and has recently added reuse water as one of several water supplies, ensuring a strong water supply for our community now and in the future.

Utilizing reuse water as a drinking water supply is not a new concept and many communities across the globe are already doing it. Aurora Water began their Prairie Waters reuse system more than 10 years ago. By 2065, it is estimated all South Metro communities will be incorporating reuse water into their supply. Castle Rock is one of several leading the way in Colorado.

For Castle Rock, reuse water is a cost effective supply as we do not need to pump it from large distances, either underground or imported. It is a reliable supply as it is readily available despite climate conditions or population changes. It’s environmentally friendly as it does not disrupt groundwater or surface water supplies.

Most importantly, the supply is safe to drink. Our state-of-the-art facility, Plum Creek Water Purification Facility already produces water that surpasses the state and federal requirements for safe drinking water. However, now our water goes through a total of nine different processes to remove impurities. Having multiple processes ensures no single treatment is responsible for removing a particular contaminant. Biological matter, viruses, and many other particulates are removed as part of standard treatment. Contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products are the focus of the added processes. Treatments use a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes to eradicate impurities all the way to the molecular level. Continuous testing show that our water has never been more pure.
