Provide input on keeping ducks, mini goats and mini pigs in Town at open house

Animal Code open house on April 9th, 2019 at Town Hall from 5:30-7 p.m.

Keeping ducks, mini goats and mini pigs within Town limits is currently not allowed under the Town’s Municipal Code. But, should that be the case? The Town wants to know what you think.

Town Council in 2018 updated the Municipal Code concerning animals. At that time, it was decided that Town staff should continue exploring issue surrounding certain types of animals residents may wish to keep within Castle Rock.

The Council further discussed this in February and directed Town staff to further engage residents and to come back with additional information regarding potentially allowing the keeping of ducks, mini goats and mini pigs in Castle Rock.

Staff has gathered some information, and now residents can weigh in at an open house on April 9. Some basic guidelines under consideration are:

  • Duck provisions should closely mirror current provisions regarding chickens, including no more than eight or 12 ducks and chickens total, depending on lot size
  • Anyone keeping mini goats must have two goats, but no more; the number of goats would count toward the total allowed number of dogs and cats allowed, which is eight
  • The keeping of one pig would be allowed; the pig would count toward the total number of dogs and cats allowed
  • Height and weight restrictions would apply to both goats and pigs

More specific details about the staff’s information will be shared at the open house, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 9 in Council Chambers at Town Hall, 100 N. Wilcox St. Those who can’t attend can view the more detailed information and provide their feedback online at CRgov.com/animals between April 8 and April 21.

Town Council has not yet made a final decision about whether these types of animals will be allowed in Town but will do so following this public input effort.
