Nov. 6 Council update

An ordinance placing regulations on aggressive panhandling in Town was approved on first reading by Town Council Tuesday. That potential ordinance will go before Council for a second reading at a later date. Also, a construction contract to convert the baseball fields at Metzler Ranch Community Park from natural grass to water-wise synthetic turf was approved. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2019.

Here’s a look at a few other items Council discussed Tuesday:

  • Excellence in Economic Development Awards – Town Council recognized the local recipients of the Economic Development Council of Colorado’s Excellence in Economic Development Awards. The Town was recognized as “Large Community of the Year” for redevelopment in Downtown, development at the Promenade at Castle Rock and for its role in the Castle Rock Collaboration Campus. The Collaboration Campus – a partnership among Arapahoe Community College, Colorado State University, the Douglas County School District and the Town – was given the EDC of Colorado’s “Partnership Award.”

Additionally, Castle Rock Economic Development Council President/CEO Frank Gray was given the state EDC’s “Economic Development Achievement Award” for his work on the Collaboration Campus, as well as on the Downtown Riverwalk project and on the Miller’s Landing project near Interstate 25 and Plum Creek Parkway.

  • 2019 Philip S. Miller Resource grants awarded – Town Council approved the applications for the 2019 Philip S. Miller Resource Grant Program. The grant is funded by the Philip S. Miller Trust Fund and aids local nonprofits pursuing the mission to support social and human services.

The Town has $40,000 budgeted for this program in 2019. After reviewing the applications and the Public Safety Commission’s recommendations, Town Council approved distributing the grant funding as follows:

    American Legion Post ($2,500)
    Crisis Center ($17,500)
