Four-way stop to stay at Rio Grande Drive and Perry Street

If you drive near Safeway in Castle Rock, you know there’s been a temporary four-way stop at Perry Street and Rio Grande Drive. Soon, that stop will become permanent.

Traffic safety is a science. The Town has traffic engineers who objectively study various factors and make decisions about new signals, signage and pavement markings to improve safety and overall operation for all users. They recently studied this intersection.

During construction along Plum Creek Parkway, the Town installed a temporary four-way stop at Perry Street and Rio Grande Drive. The goal was to improve operations and safety as additional cars drove through this intersection for various construction-related detours. Though construction is completed, traffic engineers evaluated the effectiveness of the four-way stop, along with crash and volume data at the intersection.

Those studies helped engineers determine the four-way stop will continue to benefit overall safety and operations for drivers in that intersection:
• Accident history showed there is an increasing number of accidents there that could likely be corrected with the four-way stop.
• Due to new businesses, traffic is increasing on Rio Grande Drive. The four-way stop can help alleviate increased delays, because cars will no longer have to wait for a gap in traffic along Perry Street.
• Four-way stops help alleviate broadside crashes because drivers no longer have to judge traffic gaps to move through the intersection.

The permanent stop signs will be installed in early November. Please drive safely. For more information on the Town’s transportation and traffic division, visit
