Think about your day. How often do we get in our cars and drive down a road somewhere? We traverse bridges over water, stop at stop signs, navigate turn lanes and, sometimes, travel through construction zones.
Most of the time, we don’t think about the comprehensive work that goes into designing a roadway, engineering a traffic control system, or guiding traffic through construction – all in Colorado’s unpredictable weather. These are the details Castle Rock Public Works employees are constantly monitoring for the safety of our traveling public, and they were recently recognized for excellence in their field.
The Castle Rock Public Works Department has earned accreditation through the American Public Works Association. The department is only the 110th agency in North America to earn this prestigious distinction since 1997. In fact, less than 1 percent of public works agencies have earned accreditation.
“It’s our team’s job to ensure roads are safely built and maintained, to guarantee an ambulance is ready to respond and get to an emergency, and to help our traveling public get where they need to go safely and efficiently,” said Castle Rock Public Works Director Bob Goebel. “It’s a significant responsibility, and serving our community is our top priority. We’re proud to be recognized in this way, and we are committed to continual improvement.”
Like any industry, public works personnel operate within industry standards. In their industry, the American Public Works Association defines 609 management practices or criteria. Of those, 318 applied to the Town of Castle Rock’s Public Works Department. To earn accreditation, the Town met or exceeded all of them. Four Castle Rock practices were selected as model practices for North America. The honor is significant not only in number, but also for those of us on the road.
For Castle Rock residents, this accreditation means knowing those who take care of our road infrastructure are doing so in line with nationally vetted standards, the best dollar value, the most sustainability and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Specifically, the Castle Rock Public Works Department is responsible for planning and implementing new roadway projects in line with a transportation master plan; providing maintenance and repair of roadways, sidewalks and curbs; clearing snow and ice; managing traffic signals, signage and pavement markings; and maintaining the Town’s fleet of vehicles.
The Castle Rock Public Works Department is one of six public works agencies in Colorado to be accredited. In addition to this accreditation, the Castle Rock Fire Department and Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Department are also nationally accredited in their industries.
