Roadwork starts Downtown Monday, businesses still open

Proper maintenance helps make the most of our Town’s investment in road infrastructure. That’s why the Town will be working along Wilcox and Perry streets Downtown starting Monday, April 18.

Along Wilcox Street, work to rehabilitate crosswalks begins April 18 on the south end near Briscoe Street. Crews will work their way north to Fifth Street. For safety reasons, crews will have to close off one traffic lane, but will be able to maintain two-way traffic.

In addition, a few parking spaces will need to be blocked each day, though crews will work to keep that to a minimum. The work is expected to be completed by May 6, depending on weather.

Along Perry Street, work begins April 18 with concrete repairs to curbs, gutters and sidewalks. This work will involve sidewalk closures. Additionally, some parking spaces may be blocked off.

After the concrete work on Perry Street is completed, crews will start working at night to remove the crosswalks. Crews will work from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for about three weeks. All lanes should be open for traffic by 5 a.m. each morning. Then, crews will work to resurface the street from Fifth Street to Plum Creek Parkway. That work will also occur at night. All work on Perry Street should wrap up by early June, weather permitting.

Residents and businesses directly impacted were mailed letters detailing the projects. Shortly before work begins, notices will be placed on their doors. All businesses will remain open.

Overall, the Town will invest $6.9 million in maintaining the Town’s roadways this year through the Pavement Maintenance Program. The funding is primarily from the Town’s Transportation Fund, which includes revenues from sales tax, motor vehicle tax and building use taxes.

The Council-approved Pavement Maintenance Program concentrates roadwork to one of five defined residential areas each year on a rotating basis. Additionally, primary and Downtown streets receive repairs as needed. The goal is to increase efficiency, reduce costs and minimize disruption to neighborhoods.
