Insure your property
The Town encourages property owners to take advantage of flood insurance. If your property is located within the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), known as the 100-year floodplain, you may be subject to mandatory flood insurance.
The Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973 and the National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 1994 require federally regulated, supervised or insured financial institutions and Federal Agency lenders to require flood insurance for buildings located in a participating NFIP community and in a SFHA.
Even if your property is outside a flood zone, flooding is an inherent risk. Common insurance policies, including homeowner’s insurance policies, do not cover damages due to flooding. A separate flood insurance policy is needed to cover damages from flooding. For information on how to purchase flood insurance, contact your insurance agent or visit FloodSmart.
